Should You Buy a Guitar Before Your Child’s First Lesson?

A good place to start

Try the lesson first, then choose a guitar and home setup with clearer information.

You do not need to buy a guitar before a free trial at Best Lesson Ever! We provide the instrument. Use that first visit to learn what fits your child, what they want to play, and what a workable home setup would look like.

That takes one expensive guess out of getting started. Here is how to make the trial useful before you shop.

Can we try a lesson before buying a guitar?

Yes. Best Lesson Ever! provides instruments for every free trial at our Friendswood studio. You can meet a teacher and try the instrument before deciding what to buy.

Our guitar lessons include acoustic and electric guitar. The first useful decision is which type and size suit your child and the music they want to play. A teacher can help with that conversation before you spend money.

The trial and the home setup are separate decisions. If you enroll in recurring guitar lessons, BLE recommends having a guitar for practice at home. Ask what your child will need between lessons before committing to a purchase.

Bring three things that help more than a shopping receipt

  • A favorite song or artist. Tell the teacher what sparked the interest in guitar. You do not need to know the chords or describe the style correctly.
  • Your home-practice constraints. Mention shared rooms, storage space, and whether you need a quieter way to play. These are equipment questions worth answering early.
  • A realistic total budget. Ask about the whole setup, including any accessories, amplification, or inspection a used instrument might need.

If your child is still choosing between instruments, say so. The trial is a chance to explore a fit, not an audition they need to pass.

What if we already have a guitar?

Start with its model name and a photo, then ask the studio whether to bring it to the lesson. A borrowed or secondhand guitar may be worth considering, but its size and condition matter.

Ask the teacher to look at whether your child can hold it comfortably and reach the strings and frets. If something feels difficult, ask whether the issue is instrument fit, setup, or a skill to develop. That is more useful than assuming either the child or the guitar is the problem.

For a detailed purchasing checklist, use our guide to choosing a first guitar. It covers sizing, acoustic versus electric, used-instrument checks, and accessories. This article is about the decision before that shopping trip.

Leave with answers to these four questions

  1. Which type and size should we try? Ask for a recommendation based on your child's actual reach and musical interests.
  2. What do we need to practice at home? Separate essentials from extras that can wait.
  3. What is the first thing to work on? Ask the teacher to explain the next task in words you and your child understand.
  4. What would our regular lesson arrangement be? Confirm teacher fit and the ongoing weekly time before enrolling.

A free-trial appointment does not automatically reserve the same time every week. Current availability is something to confirm with the studio, not a reason to rush an instrument purchase.

BLE membership includes Practice Challenge, with practice support and progress parents can follow. Ask how your teacher's assignments connect with the home work so buying the guitar leads to a usable plan.
